Larissa is a Learning Support / Special Educational Needs (SEN) teacher at Victoria Shanghai Academy, an IB school in Hong Kong. She teaches literacy and numeracy, working with primary school aged students with identified learning difficulties. Larissa achieved her Masters in Special and Inclusive Education from University College London, UK and has a background in Psychology and Early Childhood Education. This workshop will involve a deeper look into the issues surrounding the assessment, identification and diagnosis of Dyscalculia. Dyscalculia and Maths Learning Difficulties will be discussed in more detail in relation to other specific learning difficulties like Dyslexia. Suggestions for lesson planning, strategies for support and useful resources and tools will be shared. Maths anxiety and other implications will also be explored.

Dyscalculia & Maths Learning Difficulties - Summing Up Our Current Understanding (1 hr workshop)

What is dyscalculia? This workshop will provide an introductory overview of the current understanding in both theory and practice of supporting individuals with Dyscalculia and Maths Learning Difficulties. We hear a lot about multisensory strategies but what is it and why? Suggestions for practical strategies and hands on activities to develop number sense and foundational concepts such as place value will be discussed.
